It’s only been a week since I sat down to sew, but I was so excited like I waited a year for it. This week, I have been very productive, as much as my sewing machine allowed. And fun fact: the pattern-making videos I watched paid off; I drafted my very first top! It took me what seemed like a lifetime, but I have a sketch now.
I first measured myself, then I drew out the pattern on some huge paper I found in the study room. I had to tape the big paper pieces together to get the size I needed.

The pattern was then cut out, both the back and the front. I only did half of the front and half of the back, so the pieces can be flipped and drawn out to make a whole upper body.

I then cut out the pattern from the material you guys have already seen.

Then, I folded the front material as shown in the pattern to give it curves.

While sewing the bust part of the shirt, I made a little mistake and sewed it the wrong way. As you can see in the picture below, the material is suddenly folded outwardly, as opposed to how it was supposed to be sewn (inwardly, like on the bottom part of the picture).

I didn’t worry; I ran to my mom, and she helped me unpick it, which I overtook doing after a while. In the attempt to unpick the thread to correct my teeny mistake, the material got a bit damaged, but upon re-sewing it, the little hole we made disappeared neatly. I forgot to take a picture of it because I was too excited to sort it out. I mean, the whole thing is soooo exciting! Anyways, the finished version looked pretty beautiful:

I “tried it on”, meaning I held it against my body to see how it would fit. I realised that I needed to make small changes so that it fit my body type better, but I was still very pleased with how it turned out. The armhole was too wide for my body type, so I need to make a small change to the bust of the shirt, but that is next time’s struggle.

Why is it next week’s struggle, you might ask. Because, sadly, my machine broke. Even the notion, I mean, look at this!!

It might not be broken actually, but one thing is for sure… it malfunctioned, so I have to take it to the repair shop next week. If you have ever encountered this issue, please tell me how you resolved it. My mom looked up the cause of this nonsense of a knot online, I might take a look at how to fix it at home, but if that doesn’t work out, I’m taking it straight to the repair shop because I am so eager to finish the shirt. Either way, I could not finish the top this week, which saddened me greatly because I was so ready to wear it outside one of these days, but maybe that is next week’s excitement. BUT I made a great deal of progress on it, so happy days. Thank you for keeping up with my journey. I’m excited to share more with you as I progress.
Believe you can and you’re halfway there by Theodore Roosevelt.
