My first project

Week 3 of sewing myself a vintage wardrobe was SUUUUPER exciting!

I went to a fabric store near our home with my mom and picked out a gorgeous material that I picture as a skirt, vest, and hair accessories. I’ll sew a full set from it.

My new and first fabric is a dark brown material with light yellow and white flowers.

To find the appropriate use of this gorgeous material, I searched for inspiration before getting down to business. I watched about a million and one YouTube videos on pattern making (I collected my favourite videos into a playlist). It is trickier than it sounds, but at least I now know my measurements if I ever start making those desired vintage clothes for myself. One thing though, is that I don’t think anyone in this big wide world would advise a beginner to start with pattern-making… Which very clearly would not stop me from doing it. [In my sassy voice:] I learn from my *own* mistakes thank you very much. BUT before your panic gets the best of you, this week I didn’t actually make patterns for myself, that’s next week’s project [evil laugh]. I decided that the first project with this beautiful material would be a scrunchie, and so I followed Coraline Street’s Hair Accessories video, which was easy to understand, and very nice. The process was much fun, and I loved the outcome.

The mess of cutting the material and measuring the material for the scrunchie.

I started out by measuring the material and cutting out the necessary pieces. I used baking paper to draw out my pattern. 😄

Sewing the scrunchie. I could not be bothered to take the tablecloth off the table.:D

My mom was there to help me when I got stuck, but I singlehandedly sewed this project together, so I am very proud of it!

My unequal scrunchie.:)

Looking back at the photos and progress, I would probably make the two sides equal, because I ended up sewing the left side much thinner than the right side. On the bright side, this didn’t actually influence the outcome , it turned out to be absolutely cute!

My cute scrunchie.

I am so proud of it to be fully honest with you. Whilst it is not perfect, I’ve made mistakes (e.g. I couldn’t follow in line when I was sewing so it looks a bit crocked in places), overall I am happy and learnt a lot. I mean all the videos in the world can give you all the best advice, but actually putting your knowledge into practice makes all the difference. Scrunchies are fun to make, I’m thinking about making one for each set of clothes I make. I might try a bow next time. It would be a lot of fun to have some hair accessories for all my clothes.

I’ve officially moved on from scrap materials and finished a project this week. I mean… BIG STEP! I also have the outline and plan for next week’s project, which I revealed on my Instagram yesterday (two skirts). Speaking of my first projects, what was your first project? Do you still have it? 💕
